How the public see SEO: how SEO is portrayed by the media

Is SEO Spam 300x195 How the public see SEO: how SEO is portrayed by the mediaMost people have little or no idea what SEO is, some perhaps assume there must be some way that sites get onto Google but most assume that Google is completely in control of who ranks where and that website owners just have a build it and they will come attitude. Some new website owners sadly do have a build it and they will come attitude but that usually doesn’t last long.

People’s confusion about how the web really works though is being eroded by increasing mentions of SEO in films and TV. SEO isn’t always mentioned by name and programme makers own opinions of it may be a bit off but it could make a big difference to people’s perceptions of Google itself and the sites at the top of Google.

Dexter is just one TV show to mention SEO and to anyone who has never come across SEO before they would from the character’s description assume that SEO is akin to hacking and that we are still in the black hat days of the early 2000s.

British imported TV show Hustle seems to approach SEO slightly differently but at the same time belittles the skills of SEO experts by making it looking incredibly simple. The team of conmen manipulate Google’s search results to create fantastic online profiles for their characters for their scams. Each time it takes them a matter of hours to dominate the first page on Google with articles and social media profiles; they could probably earn a lot more as a result as SEO professionals.

Another US show The Good Wife has a court case with a defendant whose job in SEO is again portrayed as being along the same lines as hacking: this is to the extent that he fears that the jury will be prejudice against him. They interestingly in this show also mention Spam as almost synonymous with SEO as well, is that how people see SEO?

For those of us working in SEO it seems that our frustration at having to explain what we do to people may soon be replaced by a look of disgust if more shows portray SEO as some dark art. Will saying you work in SEO mean the same as saying ‘I Spam people for a living’ soon? Some people use SEO for spamming search results, that is still not the same as e-mail spam, but this is less and less possible.

Google risks being affected as well by a rising tide of bad feeling if the opinion is passed as fact that Google allow supposed spamming of their results. Google currently defend genuine SEO could this even be set to change? For the time being mentions are rare and brief enough that people may not make the link when you tell them what you do but people perhaps will start to question more whether the top result on Google is really the best.

Yahoo Site Explorer is no longer available

Yahoo Site Explorer is no longer available due to the completion of the algorithmic translation to Bing, according to Yahoo Search Blog. Yahoo encourages to use the Bing Webmaster Tools which will help to continue getting high quality organic traffic from both Yahoo and Bing. Famous Yahoo Site Explorer functionality went down yesterday.

Google confirm some of their algorithm changes

SEO Tampa Company 300x274 Google confirm some of their algorithm changesAmongst the speculation and conjecture it can be difficult sometimes to really understand what Google have and haven’t changed about their algorithm. There are somethings though which we do know for sure, or at least almost.

These recent algorithm changes, we don’t know how recent, have been confirmed by staff at Google in the Google Policy Blog and so all SEO experts and webmasters should take note. To have got to the point where they are announced these aren’t going to be tweaks that Google are playing with but changes they have made a decision to keep long term.

This first change you can see with your own eyes, the snippets used in Google search results are going to be from more relevant parts of the page and not just the header. This is based on the fact that Google’s robots are getting better at identifying the main page content, partly based on what is unique we would assume rather than what is on every page of your site but also probably based on heading tags. To be successful at SEO you need to be good at getting your results to show high up in Google but also to make sure they are clicked on. In the past it was important to make sure you had a relevant meta description now it seems that the places where key phrases are found are more important; you may need to think more carefully about the words around a phrase and the context in which they are used.

Now for a long time the anchor text for links coming in to your site has been used by SEO experts for placing keywords in, it has become SEO best practice. Google have used this information to decide what your site is about but also as a factor in deciding what page title to use in results. From now on anchor text that is repeated on links from many sites is going to be ignored and the title taken from other on page text.

Slightly less important to most people doing SEO, but vital to some who have used this as a less used tactic are changes to image search. Ranking of images in image search has been based on references to them from a high number of documents online, Google have decided this is no longer important it seems.

As well as these definite changes there are also two changes to Google’s algorithm the result of which they are happy to explain but not the process: i.e. how the algorithm will achieve these changes.

First is that Google aim to serve up fresher results, although they don’t go into detail it is fairly simple to suppose that content either published within a certain period of time before will be given a higher ranking factor or that it will be relative: so that a two year old page will come above a three year old page. Plenty of new fresh content then is going to become even more vital for SEO.

The other change is that Google aim to become better at detecting an official page, this will be most relevant for those using keywords based on people, brands, companies and other organization names. If SEO experts can get an idea of how Google will decide which is an official site it may be possible to trick Google: therefore Google are likely to keep that information to themselves.

Google’s Third Quarter Earnings Show Search Advertising Is On The Rise

Googles Third Quarter Earnings Show Search Advertising Is On The Rise

In three quarters of 2011 Google has made $27,321B comparing to $29,321B Google had made in 2010. No questions, 2011 will be the best year ever for Google and I predict that in the 4 th quarter of 2011 Google will make the quarter record of around $11B. As you may know, most of Google’s  revenue comes from Google’s main business, Search Engine Advertising including Google AdWords.

It’s not a surprise that when the economy gets tough small businesses usually loose some existing customers and get less new clients. Obviously, consumer and business customers try to save and don’t spend as much during the difficult economical time which leads to a significant decrease in small business revenue and creates a domino effect on the economy. However, no matter how bad economy gets we still need a dentist if we have a toothache or a car mechanic if  a car needs an oil change or a repair. This means there is still a demand for small business services and products even when the economy is as soft as it is now and if you play your cards right your business will survive if not improve during the difficult economic times.

I hope it’s no-brainer, the answer to a small business success during the economic recession is the smart advertising, the advertising to a potential customer which is actually seeking for products or services your business provides. Keep in mind that for a small business owner it’s also very important for the advertising to be very cost effective which brings me to the PPC (Pay-Per-Click) marketing or Google AdWords, Google’s version of PPC.

The proof that Google AdWords is the most productive marketing tool on the market is Google’s revenue , the earning Google has been continuously making with the steady increase year after year. That’s a proof that Google AdWords works and if you are not doing that now then you might be loosing a good percentage of your revenue to your competition. With the economic outlook is not being very bright now you might start rethink your marketing strategy for the rest of this year and year 2012.  Don’t waste your time and money, think Google AdWords and start advertising with Google.

Small Businesses should take a look at Google plus’s pages for business

GooglePlus SEO Tampa Small Businesses should take a look at Google plus’s pages for business

Google Plus is slowly catching on and having a presence on there is surprisingly important for SEO. Tampa businesses can now use Google plus’s business pages feature that has just been launched.

Google plus is, to put it simply, Google’s answer to Facebook, but until recently there was one obvious difference. On Facebook you had both user profiles – which were most of the time only viewable to friends who had accepted your friend request or where you had accepted there’s – and then there were

Facebook pages for businesses, bands, brands and basically any entities that were things people might like and then follow, with no need for reciprocation. Google meanwhile had until recently only offered standard user profiles that worked in a similar way to Facebook’s standard pages.

Now though if you have a small business you can set up a page on the new Google plus for business style pages and we certainly recommend this for any Tampa business looking to improve their SEO. Tampa businesses can benefit from a wide variety of features that only Google plus business pages have.

One useful feature for the purposes of SEO Tampa businesses should use is to ensure you have a plus 1 button on their Google plus page. The Google Plus one button is a way of people easily recommending you and your business when they come across you, both on Google Plus and elsewhere on the web. Though plus one is a new feature it seems that Google are already considering how many plus ones a page or site has to decide where it comes in Google search rankings so it could become vital for SEO. Tampa businesses may also be interested in having on their Google plus pages maps showing their location, this makes it simple for people who come across you to see where you are and even get directions right then and there from their address – or if they are accessing your page from a smart-phone they can even get direction from where they are automatically.

Some Tampa businesses may wonder why they would want to have a Google Plus page as well as their own site? A Google Plus business page though can be a great place to build a community of customers and get testimonials posted and questions asked. People will often use Google Plus to ask friends for recommendations as well and if you have a page on there it makes it that little easier for someone to send a friend to you.

We have already put together a first revision of the Google+ local business page for SEO Tampa. Please visit our g+ page, follow us  and share our page (https://plus.google.com/101488717415424186368).

Google+ is Opened for Business

Google Plus For Business Google+ is Opened for Business

As of today [11/07/2011] Google+ is opened for business.

Now Google social network is not only connecting people but also bring closer people to local businesses and to global brands.  According to blog post by Vic Gundotra, Senior Vice President of Engineering “For businesses and brands, Google+ pages help you connect with the customers and fans who love you. Not only can they recommend you with a +1, or add you to a circle to listen long-term. They can actually spend time with your team, face-to-face-to-face. All you need to do is start sharing, and you’ll soon find the super fans and loyal customers that want to say hello.”

Google has also introduced the “Direct Connect” from Google search. Direct connect should make it easy to connect to business page. Just add a search for [+], followed by the name of the business.

Google business pages are very new and obviously missing a few key features compare to Facebook business pages. However the search-ability of Google+ business pages will bring a great significance to businesses on Google+. This is undeniable a great move on Google part to compete with Facebook on the social networking arena. What would be the next Facebook move?

How to Choose Keywords for Your SEO Campaign

It’s obvious that the right keywords for SEO campaign is what will guarantee the success of the SEO optimization and should lead to the inbound traffic increase. Let’s take a local dental practice as an example  for choosing the right keywords.

Dental SEO campaigns can be a great way for a dentists to spend their marketing budget; an SEO campaign can be very good value and it is fairly easy to measure return on investment. The problem is working out which keywords that you have invested in optimizing are bringing in that return or if there is no return you need to change what you are doing.

A dental SEO campaign will often start off with some of the most obvious keywords and perhaps even some keywords that competitors are using. It could well be that a competitor in another area is doing well with a certain set of keywords and you may be able to do the same and adapt them for your local area, further keywords can be researched from an initial set.

Dentists are of course focused on a certain geographic area, as yet dentistry can’t be provided over the internet. Dental SEO then should consider looking for relevant local keywords with the name of areas, town and city names, state names and other local related words as part of longer phrases.
